The Lafarge Beaune Grèves is a spectacular wine. It is produced from century-old vines that deliver a wine of great concentration depth and length. There is a focused mulberry and black plum fruit with hints of earth leather and cigar leaf on the initial attack and a firm texture that remains vibrant due to the crisp acidity from the small concentrated berries. 2022 will be the last vintage to taste just the old vines ? next year some younger vines will come online and be added to the blend. (Drink between 2027-2055)
A perfumed and broad-ranging nose features notes of plum dark cherry exotic tea and a whiff of crushed fennel. The succulent even suave but impressively punchy larger-bodied flavors display first-rate power and drive on the stony balanced and very clearly built-to-age finale. This is always one of my favorite wines chez Lafarge as it often seems underappreciated relative to the Volnay 1ers that routinely receive top billing. If you have the patience this is potentially sensational. (Drink starting 2034)
Last year of the 100+ year old plot on its own ? young vines will be incorporated next year. Even so 32 hl/ha from 101 year old vines. An even crimson to ruby colour. There are firm gravelly tannins here plus the exceptional intensity of ancient vines. Good acidity too. Needs plenty of time. Lots of detail here.
The 2022 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru comes from 101-year-old vines the oldest that comprise two-thirds of this cuvée. They apparently continue to produce good yields. It has a delineated bouquet with raspberry wild strawberry gravel and light orange rind aromas very nicely focused with the 15% new oak seamlessly integrated. The palate has a cohesive quite powerf
Offering up aromas of dark berries cherries and plums mingled with peonies and spices the 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves is medium to full-bodied deep and layered with a rich core of fruit framed by sweet powdery tannins. The 2022 vintage was showing well during my annual barrel tasting chez Lafarge emphasizing the charming pretty side of the year. The team began picking on August 26 another early harvest. As usual reds were destemmed in some cases manually and élevage is taking place in predominantly used barrels with the Lafarge's habitual racking with aeration. The result is wines with a resolutely old-school style that have a good track record of evolving gracefully in the cellar. Published: Jan 18 2024
