The 2019 vintage of les Chèvres from Vincent Laval is not much more open than the 2020 version, despite it seeing a full year longer resting sur lattes in the cellars in Cumières. The wine is pure, youthfully complex and very, very precise on the nose, wafting from the glass in a mix of white peach, fresh apricot, brioche, a great base of chalky soil tones, incipient smokiness, orange zest, a whisper of oak and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and beautifully structured, with a beautifully integrated spine of acidity, superb depth of fruit, lovely soil transparency, elegant mousse and a very, very long, seamlessly-balanced and focused finish. This too will need at least a decade in the cellar to really drink with generosity, but at this early stage, my gut instincts are that it will land even a shade higher on the quality hierarchy than the beautiful 2020 version.
