This 41 hectare estate is run by brothers Vincent and Pascal Maurel. It is in fact one of the oldest estates in the region having been founded in 1900 and having bottled wine since 1910. About two thirds of the vineyards are located on the Le Crau plateau – rich in iron and covered with the famous galets – and a third on nearly soils of alluvial origin with more clay and sand.
The wines today are made in a modern style. The farming is organic. After destemming almost all the fruit, fermentation is in concrete tanks with long macerations on the skins – about 35 days – with the Grenache receiving gentle pumpovers and the Syrah and Mourvèdre punchdowns. The Grenache is aged in concrete but the Syrah and Mourvedre rests in barrique and slightly larger demi-muids.
Three special cuvees are made, all sourced mostly from Le Crau. Sanctorum, which is old vines Grenache aged in demi-muid; Deux Ex Machina, a more powerful wine which includes some old vine Mourvedre, and La Combe des Fous, aged in tank and demi muid, which in addition in to being 70% Grenache and 20% Syrah also contains Vaccarese and Cinsault resulting in a rich and concentrated wine.
On a higher level to the domaine?s Tradition cuvée this year this has really fresh and lively aromatics and a delightfully vibrant palate. The star fruit and pear flavours have huge impact and it has remarkable lightness for a wine with such concentration. Long well balanced and impressive. Also contains 11% Bourboulenc and 1% each of various other white varieties. Biodynamic fermented and aged in foudres and old barriques. 4000 bottles made. (Drink between 2023-2030)
An elegant and complex white that balances ripe plumpness with beautiful freshness and energy. Fleshy stone fruit and crisp apple flavors show subtle honeyed edges and a salted buttercream note all built around a smoky flinty mineral spine. Well-meshed with good length and bitter white tea tannins driving the finish. Will only get better with a few years in bottle. Clairette and Roussanne. Drink now through 2032. From France.?K.B.
A smaller production cuvée based on a mix of just about all the white varieties the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Boisrenard Blanc is a similar medium gold hue and boasts a brilliant perfume of honeyed orange white peach white flowers spice and crushed stone. This rich medium to full-bodied focused and elegant white shows a vibrant clean lengthy style that will benefit from 6-12 months of bottle age and I suspect evolve gracefully for at least 4-6 years.
A well-composed velvety and juicy white with aromas of dried pears wild herbs mild spices and some quince peel. It?s medium-bodied with plenty of energy. Vivid with a delicious core of bitter almonds at the center. Seductive and flavorful with a distinguished finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.
Beaurenard's special cuvée the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Boisrenard is mainly Clairette Blanche (42%) and Roussanne (32%) with 11% Bourboulenc 10% Grenache Blanc and 1% each of Clairette Rose Grenache Gris Picardan Picpoul Blanc and Picpoul Gris. Matured in foudres and older barriques it delivers scents of pear melon and citrus not of wood with ample weight a fine sense of balance and a silky lingering finish.
